Heat Pump Vs Furnace: Real Costs

3 min read

A furnace often costs less to install. A heat pump often costs less to run because it moves heat instead of making it. Your fuel rates, duct shape, and local winter decide the payback.

Install Cost In Plain Ranges

Single zone ductless often lands from 8,500 to 12,500 installed. Multi zone ductless runs 12,000 to 36,500. Ducted whole home runs 16,500 to 25,000. Cold climate ducted runs 18,500 to 36,500. These are April 2026 HPN planning ranges. Your bid moves with panel work, duct fixes, line set length, and snow stand needs.

A gas furnace swap can run less upfront when gas pipe, vent, and ducts already fit. Add a new gas line, chimney liner, or full duct rebuild and that gap shrinks fast.

Get line item bids. Equipment, labor, electrical, duct changes, permits, and thermostat should each show.

Monthly Heat Cost

A furnace burns fuel. Efficiency tops near 98 percent for new gas units. You pay for every BTU.

A heat pump moves heat from outside air. Even in cold air there is heat to move. One unit of power can move two to four units of heat across much of the season. That ratio drops as it gets colder and rises in mild weather.

So compare your rates. High oil or propane prices tilt toward heat pumps. Cheap gas with pricey power narrows it. Ask your contractor to model both at your last 12 months of use.

Fuel By Fuel Notes

Oil to heat pump is often the clearest win. Oil runs hot and pricey. Many oil homes also need chimney and tank care that goes away with the swap.

Propane is similar. Propane per BTU often costs more than power per BTU moved by a heat pump.

Gas is closer. In mild states a heat pump can beat gas on running cost. In deep winter gas can run cheaper on the coldest nights. Dual fuel plans use the pump most days and gas on design nights.

Baseboard electric is simple. A heat pump usually cuts heat power use by half or more because baseboards turn one unit of power into one unit of heat.

Lifespan And Care Cost

Furnaces often run 15 to 20 years. Heat pumps often run 12 to 17 years because they work year round. Filters, coil cleaning, and condensate care decide a lot.

Plan on yearly service. Dirty filters and blocked outdoor units raise bills first, then cause calls. The maintenance checklist on this site walks the full list.

Comfort Differences Worth Money

Heat pumps give steady low airflow instead of short hot blasts. Rooms feel even. Summer cooling comes with the same box, so window units can retire.

Furnaces give hot supply air that feels strong at the vent. Some folks love that feel. Others prefer the even temps of a pump running long cycles.

Noise matters too. Ask for rated sound at full and low speed. Ask where the outdoor unit will sit relative to beds and patios.

Resale And Rebate Effects

Buyers ask about heat bills and cooling. A documented install with Manual J, permits, and commissioning reports reads well at sale time.

State and utility rebate programs change net cost. Check current program pages for your state and save the page date. National credit programs that ended December 31, 2025 are history. Treat any old credit post as past tense only.
